Scholarly uses of Document Sharing and Collaboration

How have you used document sharing and collaboration in your own scholarship? What have you learned from this experience (and can it be translated into the areas of pedagogy and individual use?) Do you find this valuable?

Doug and all:

I am actually in the middle of explaining Google Docs to a group of colleague at JMU so that we can get some work done together this summer. Unexpectedly, I have had a torrid time making it work. The most difficult part has been getting across the idea that, with Docs, you don't have a "group admin." Also, the e-mail based sharing system has been pretty sketchy, locking some people out from time to time. In large part because of this experience, I have been hesitant to use Google docs with students, using a wiki instead.
Do you find this valuable?
